Coming out onto the open ridge, Tomlike Mtn. is in view

With it’s long stretching views in all directions, Tomlike Mtn. is my favorite summit in the Gorge. The adjacent Wolley Horn Ridge invites exploration or simply a great spot to take a load off and have some lunch. Drive to Wahtum Lake TH and Camp, it is $11 a night for a spot here. If you have time for only a day hike, turn right on the PCT for 1.5 miles to the Herman Creek TR that you take for just over a mile to a junction with the Anthill TR. From here, turn right for a short 300 ft. until you see a couple foot high rock carin at the end of a switchback, this is the Tomlike TR. Take this brushy way until it opens up to view of Tomlike ahead, climb through rock and heather gardens to it’s 4555ft. summit. From here, you can see a spectacular view of Mt. St Helens, Hood, Mt. Adams and down to the Herman Creek Drainage. Wander as far as you like on this pleasant ridge before it starts dropping down in elevation, take out a map and see if you can identify closer in mountains like Chinidere, Indian and Defiance. When you are ready to head back, take Anthill TR back to your car to complete this 6.6 mile loop. Next, plan your winter excursion up to the Mountain via Herman Creek, when the heather blooms fade along with the crowds.
