F yeah, finally a cottage company that makes tall sizes. I found a blue and orange one on Gear Swap for a good price, so I got it. My first impression of it was that the large tall fit me in all the right places that have always bugged me lengthwise. Like the overall length of the coat and the sleeves being long enough to seal in the gap with your gloves. They say that they size it up a half size larger for layering and that in my opinion is a smart move and gives this garment great movement. It’s amply filled with Apex Climashield that automatically tells me that this company cares about the integrity of there products. Also the attention to detail is important to note in this coat. The sinch for the bottom is inside the kangaroo pocket, it’s a nice touch EE. When I guide, it’s the synthetic layer that I reach for most often. They can get wet first off and still insulate you. It’s one thing to be on my own trips with down layers. I could mosey faster to get to camp or set up real quick if I need to. Guiding, especially here in the Southeast, I can be moving at 1/2 mile with family from Iowa or some shit in a 2 inch an hour thunderstorm. Then you drop into a deep Smoky Mountain Valley late in the day to camp and the temps are dropping and it’s still dumping. One time I had to give some dude my coat because he said in the orientation that he “ran hot” and he just brought a fleece against my advice for the forecast ahead. By the time I helped them set up and boil some water for their meals while shooting the breeze, I was mad cold. So I crawled in my sleeping bag and brought my core temperature up and I was cool. Mostly because I rocked a quality Western Mountaineering bag and bunkered down my tent. Anyway, if you are a person that worries about these sort of scenarios or live in a wet climate like the Olympic Peninsula or Florida you may want to consider a layer like this. Anyway, enough rambling and back The Apex filling is puffy and warms you up way faster than down would. The hood is ample and connects with the coat with a bomber collar that feels more like a mountaineering cut. This a quality layer for the tall individual.
