One Day Wilderness: Lookout Mountain

Posted by on Aug 31, 2015 in Uncategorized | No Comments

The view from Lookout Mountain in the quiet Badger Creek Wilderness is simply amazing. To the south, you can see down to the Sisters and to the north Mt. Rainier’s icy cone stands high above it all. Take Hwy 26 to 35 to a right turn on Dulfur Mill Rd. and follow it to a right turn on High Prairie Rd. 4410 to a T intersection where you bear left to the trailhead, a total of 2 hrs. of driving from Portland. This a great hike to do with kids or older folks because it is short, has limited elevation gain and great for fall colors. This 2.5 mile loop hike is best done counterclockwise, so take the right split to the top of this 6525 ft. mountain. If you want to stay overnight, try car camping at Badger Lake Campground and hike up to Lookout from there, it is a 9.8 mi. round trip journey.
